Legislation Regarding Rainwater Harvesting Systems

Legislation varies widely across the US when it comes to rainwater harvesting. Cities like New York utilize green roofs and rainwater harvesting systems to provide efficient ways of saving water and improving the environment.

Other states have more difficult decisions to make when water resources are at a premium. Some have legislation in place that prevents residential properties from installing it while others have outlawed it completely like Ohio. Much of it comes down to people diverting water that potentially ‘belongs to someone else’ such as farmers and ranchers.

It's a good idea to check what the legislation in your state is before you decide to take on a rainwater harvesting system.
