Can I build my own solar panel system?
DIY Solar Panels.
It is possible to build and install your own solar panel system, and often the cost of doing so would be much lower compared with the prices charged by professional solar panel installers.
Do you want to benefit from renewable incentives?
The crucial thing to bear in mind, however, is that DIY installs are not immediately eligible for some state and federal tax rebates and credits. It depends where you live and it’s a good idea to check before you undertake such a major construction job. While the cost of panels usually involves about 10% for installation and labor, there are benefits for choosing someone qualified to do the job.
Connecting to the Grid
It’s a dangerous business to connect your solar system to the grid so unless you live in a remote area you will need to get someone qualified to do it if you don’t want to fall foul of the law. Different states have their own legislation when it comes to matters like this so it’s also a good idea to check these rules as well.
DIY solar panel kits
Some companies offer DIY solar kits, which include all of the necessary hardware (solar modules, inverter, generation meter, brackets, cabling etc). While buying these yourself the actual installation should probably be done by someone with a professional qualification, particularly if you want to qualify for incentives. Anyone installing should ideally be part of the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP).
Building and installing solar panels yourself is still a viable option if you plan on using all of the energy produced by your solar panel system or if your property is off the grid, although the financial rewards will be significantly lower if you can’t access incentives such as the federal tax rebate.
